Re~Cycle is a UK charity that sends unwanted bicycles from the UK to Africa. Local partner organisations refurbish, re-sell and help to maintain these bicycles so they have a long-lasting positive impact on the lives of those in the communities they support. We have grown our income from £150k to £500k over the past three years. To improve on this success we have a fundraising strategy (2016-19) which outlines new activities including committed giving, community/sponsored event and major donor work.
We are currently looking for new trustees to join our illustrious Board. Although we do not want the Board to grow too large, there are a few areas of expertise which we would like to bring in at this stage in our development.
We are specifically looking for expertise in the areas of:
- Accounts (treasurer)
- Delivering charity projects on the ground in Africa
The Board meets quarterly, normally in London, with the December meeting being combined with the Re~Cycle Christmas party in Essex. Occasionally there is a group call or team building day, and Trustees can take on small tasks according to the area of specialism they are bringing.
Being a Trustee for Re~Cycle is enormously rewarding for the right person and this is a very exciting time, having experienced huge growth and expanded our remit. While so far we have built our sector leading bike shipping operation, we are now beginning to develop our programme portfolio beyond the partner work which to date has funded so many superb charities on the ground in Africa. These charity partners remain central to our model, but in addition we are developing programmes with some existing and some new partner organisations, to establish exactly how much influence we can achieve in remote and peri-urban communities to recognise the huge potential of the bicycle as an efficient form of mobility and transportation.
Being a Trustee for us doesn't require you to have prior knowledge of bikes or African development issues, though these are greatly welcomed.
At Re~Cycle we want our trustees to be passionate about what we do and have a clear reason for supporting the charity’s aims. We want our trustees to provide support to the strategy and direction of the charity, providing broad knowledge and experience.
Trustees ensure that the charity complies with charity law, with the requirements of the Charity Commission as our regulator, and with requirements and rules set out in our governing documents. They assist with providing strategic oversight and input into the operation of the charity. Trustees act as ambassadors for Re~Cycle, representing the charity at key moments and facilitating networking opportunities with potential donors, corporations or other potential funding streams. Please see the Trustees guide for a breakdown of legal responsibilities.
