A group of Halfords store bicycle mechanics from the Dublin area have been lucky enough to have their idea chosen in the company’s internal initiative dubbed ‘Journey of a Lifetime’.
The team developed an idea that would see the inclusion of Re~Cycle as Halfords charity partner, as well as benefitting our Gambian partner WYCE. The team are currently fundraising to help send a shipment of approx. 500 bikes to The Gambia, and plan to be involved every step of the way.
With fundraising efforts ramped up already, they have also held an area specific trade-in event through their stores (customers donate an unwanted bicycle to Re~Cycle via Halfords and receive 10% off new purchases) and plan on visiting the Re~Cycle warehouse to work alongside volunteers and staff in the packing of the container to Gambia. The whole experience culminates for the team in a week-long volunteering trip to WYCE in Gambia where they will unload and support the mechanics trained by Re~Cycle, as well as volunteer in the wider educational and health programmes WYCE support. It will be a unique opportunity for them to see the entire journey a bicycle takes through Re~Cycle - from a donation by individuals through to our partners and beneficiaries in Africa.
While the trip is being funded by Halfords, the team still hope to raise 20,000 euros for both Re~Cycle and WYCE and raise awareness along the way. This is the first time an initiative of this kind has been trialled in Halfords, but the company hope to see great results from the Dublin team – not only benefiting their chosen charities but also seeing great results within personal development and team building.

We look forward to having the team at the warehouse in the New Year!
