Merlin founded Re~Cycle in 1997 and remains as enthusiastic as ever about its’ many benefits both in Africa and in the UK.                                

Role                      

Responsible for strategic direction and coordinating the expanding Re-Cycle team.         

Background/Previous experience                           

Started Re-Cycle when still a student the London School of Economics and later attended the School for Social Entrepreneurs. Continues to look to learn how to improve the charity.  Has visited most of our African Partners and has a lot of respect for them.  

Hobbies & Interests                       

Is passionately interested in green and environmental issues. Rides a 'stretch bike' by Xtracycle – great for load carrying and taking his son to school. Is there something out there that he can’t carry on the back?         


 

Derek Balcombe

Name and Job Title                        

Derek Balcombe – Operations Manager               

Joined Re-Cycle               

April 2005 having first joined as a volunteer.

UPDATE 26th October 2016 After 12 year Derek has left Re-Cycle. We thank him for his contribution to our work and he has our very best wishs for the future. In the short term Jason, Claire and Charlotte will cover his role between them before a longer term decision is made about a replacement.

Role                      

He was our Warehouse Manager for 2 years before taking over as Office Manager. Is now  Operations Manager with particular responsibility for shipping and ensuring Re-Cycle meets the needs of our African Partners. Has visited Re-Cycle’s partners in Ghana, Namibia and South Africa.

Background/Previous experience                           

Previously worked outside the charity sector in sales/distribution.

Hobbies & Interests                       

Enjoys gardening and coaxing his chickens to lay another egg by reading to them extracts from “100 Chicken Soup Recipes”.            

 


 

Kelley Parfitt

Name and Job Title                        

Kelley Parfitt – Fundraising Manager      

Joined Re-Cycle               

September 2012 having worked in the charity sector since 1998.

UPDATE 2nd September 2016 Kelley has just left Re-Cycle to become Fundraising Manager at Women's Aid, Nottingham. We thank her for her massive contribution to our work and she has our very best wishes for the future. Stephen Campbell will shortly take over Kelley's role and we are all looking forward to him joining us early October. Watch his space for further information.

Role                      

Kelley looks after Trust Fundraising and also manages our fundraising team.

Background/Previous experience                           

Started work with Oxfam on their graduate placement scheme in the campaigns team and subsequently worked in fundraising with several charities. She has an MA in Conflict, Development and Security and holds the Certificate in Fundraising Management (IoF).

Hobbies & Interests                       

Has an allotment and has recently moved into a sadly neglected Victorian house so is honing her DIY and decorating skills.

 


 

Roz_Taylor

Roz Taylor – Corporate Partnerships Manager

Roz joined Re~Cycle in July 2014.

Role                       

Roz will be managing our fantastic partnership with Halfords and developing new corporate partnerships and relationships for Re~Cycle. NB Roz is currently on maternity leave.

Background/Previous experience                           

She has over 10 years' fundraising and marketing experience gained working in not-for-profit organisations both in the UK and Australia.

If only she had time for hobbies. Too busy right now!    

 


 

Abbi Roberts

Abbi Roberts – Corporate Partnerships Manager

February 2016 on a maternity cover basis

Role                       

Abbi is providing maternity cover for Roz and manages the relationship with existing corporate supporters, including Halfords, and is working to develop new corporate contacts with businesses across sectors.

Background/Previous experience                           

Abbi has several years’ experience in Fundraising and Business Development within the charity sector and has previously worked for The Prince’s Trust and Shelter Box.

Hobbies & Interests                       

Sailing from a young age and competing in windsurfing at a national level. Enjoys travelling and has travelled extensively across Europe, Australia, New Zealand and Asia. Abbi took up road cycling in 2015 and in September completed a 1,000 mile cycle to Barcelona.          

 


 

Lucy Holmes

Role                       

Lucy will be working with community groups and individuals to raise funds and awareness through a number of activities and events.

She has 10 years experience in the charity sector working in events and fundraising.

Hobbies & Interests                       

Lucy loves travelling and exploring new places and enjoys going to the gym. Lucy enjoys photography and crafting but in reality spends most of her free time chasing after her very active toddler.

Jason Finch – African Programmes Manager

November 2015

Role                       

Responsible for Re~Cycle’s in-country programming, Jason works closely with our operations and fundraising teams to implement projects tailored to the needs of each of our partners’ targeted beneficiaries. He also delivers training to the bicycle mechanics employed by our partners and is working to upgrade existing and build new bicycle repair workshops in Africa.

Background/Previous experience                           

Jason had previously worked as Country Director for our partner, the Village Bicycle Project in Ghana. He’s worked in Africa for the last 6 years and whilst there visited many bicycle and development projects across the continent.

Hobbies & Interests                       

Jason is a keen photographer and enjoys getting off the beaten track on his mountain bike followed by a cold beer.                               

 


 

David Carry

David Carry – Head of Media & Communications

Role                       

David looks after our Marketing and Communications and has been responsible for developing the brand, our digital strategy, and increasing engagement through media and communications across all channels.

Background/Previous experience                           

He has over twenty years experience in digital media, marketing communications, and as a creative building some of the world’s largest media brands. After making a move away from the commercial world, he has been consulting for the non-profit sector since 2005.

Hobbies & Interests                       

David has a passion for philosophy, the science of mind, and is a practising Buddhist. He owns far too many synthesisers and spends much of his spare time tweaking oscillators and filters.

Luke is responsible for developing our digital presence and works closely with the fundraising and marketing team to support their needs and projects.

Has worked in the digital marketing world for 4 years.

Hobbies & Interests                       

Luke is a keen photographer and after dark turns into a DJ. Birthdays, Weddings and Bar Mitzvahs enquiries always welcome. All tastes in underground electronic music catered for from Chris de Burgh to Boney M.

 


Claire Kettle

Claire Kettle - Office Manager

Joined Re-Cycle               

Claire joined Re~Cycle in October 2014.

Role                       

Claire ensures that the office runs smoothly, looks after our premises and our team of dedicated volunteers and keeps a careful check that our health and safety policies are maintained and adhered to.

Background/Previous experience                           

She started working in the charity sector in 2003 initially as Office Manager for the NSPCC, before moving on to become Manager for a local Colchester-based charity.

Hobbies & Interests                       

Claire enjoys travelling and going to live music and sporting events. She follows Formula One racing and recently visited France to see stage 1 and 2 of the Tour de France cycling race.

 


 

Charlotte Ward

Charlotte Ward - Office Administrator

August 2014.

Role                       

Charlotte assists in the day to day administration of the charity with cheerful efficiency and closely supports our Operations and Office Managers.

Background/Previous experience                           

She has extensive experience in training support, recruitment, administration and HR background previously working in local government.

Hobbies & Interests                       

Charlotte is a mum of two boys who love playing football. She coaches her three boys – two small, 1 big - on how to beat the offside trap and other subtle arts. When not running up and down the sideline for a rest she enjoys taking them for walks with their dog.

Leon Halsey, Loading Supervisor       

Joined Re-Cycle               

July 2013.

Role                       

Assists the Warehouse Supervisor having particular responsibility for supervising the loading of container shipments out to Africa. Also looks after the sorting and packing of spare parts and all goods as requested by our partners.

Background/Previous experience                           

Leon first worked at Re~Cycle for 6 months on an extended Work Experience scheme funded by local The Job Centre. When this finished he continued to help as an unpaid volunteer. We were very pleased to subsequently offer him his first permanent job.

Hobbies & Interests                       

Even after working all day with bikes Leon enjoys getting on his own bike for some off road cycling. He also enjoys being taken for a walk by his boundlessly energetic dog.

Chris Smith – Workshop Mechanic

Role                       

Chris is a Cytech 3 technical qualified bicycle mechanic who looks after the servicing and restoration of bikes for sale.

Background/Previous experience                           

Did 27 years’ service in the British army as a musician (saxophonist)

Hobbies & Interests                       

Chris is an army reservist and still plays in an army band in this country and abroad on special occasions. On Sundays he will cycle 50 miles to relax and wind down.

Martin Lawson – Warehouse Supervisor

November 2013

Role                       

Martin is responsible for running our warehouse in Colchester; working with Leon to receive donated bikes and preparing them for shipping to our partners in Africa. He also has a lead role in co-ordinating the vital contribution made to the success of our charity by the hard working and dedicated team of volunteers.

Background/Previous experience                           

Previously worked as a Housing Officer and Claims Loss Adjuster. He joined Re~Cycle as a volunteer during a “middle aged” gap year and enjoyed himself so much that he has been tempted to re-join the working world!

Hobbies & Interests                       

For light reading Martin studies Existentialism and he enjoys music and a wide range of visual and performance art. Favorite film: Monty Python’s “The Meaning of Life” – possibly.

Debbie Beckett – Bookkeeper

Role                       

Debbie is responsible for the day to day book keeping and financial management of the charity, as well as reporting on financial performance to management and our accountants.

Background/Previous experience                           

A qualified AAT accounts technician, with a wide range of bookkeeping, secretarial and administration skills.

Enjoys keeping fit and living a healthy lifestyle.
