Abel & Cole - The Wheelie Big Bike Drop - 23/9/10

Have you got any old bikes that you want to recycle? If so, now is your chance to give them a new life in Ghana!

Leading organic veg box suppliers Abel & Cole has teamed up with Re~Cycle to collect at least 650 bikes over September and October. The bikes will then be shipped out to the Village Bicycle Project, one of our best partners, in Ghana.

The Wheelie Big Bike Drop kicks off with a Pedal Powered Party at the Abel & Cole depot in Wimbledon on Saturday, 25th September where there will be a whole load of bike-related fun and games with goodies to eat and drink. This is the perfect opportunity for Londoners to donate unwanted bikes. You'll find all the details by visiting Abel & Cole's website at www.abelandcole.co.uk/the-wheelie-big-bike-drop.

On the following Saturday, 2nd October, bikes can also be dropped at Abel & Cole depots from 9am until 1pm in:

  • London - Wimbledon
  • Cheshire - Warrington
  • Hampshire - Andover
  • Staffs - Tamworth
  • Kent - Maidstone
  • Essex - Ongar

Please visit the Abel & Cole website www.abelandcole.co.uk/the-wheelie-big-bike-drop for location addresses and to pledge your support with unwanted bikes. We also need parts, tools so these will be gratefully received.

If you have any time to spare, we also need some volunteers to prepare bikes for shipment. Anyone can volunteer - with or without tools! The kind of preperation includes taking pedals off and turning bars and generally stripping good parts from dead bikes so they can all be recycled. Please go to http://www.re-cycle.org/How-To/Prepare-bike-for-shipping for more information.  Our general volunteer page is here - please get involved.

We will be loading the container in Wimbledon at some future date -  possibly around Friday, 12th and Saturday, 13th November, so please let us know if you'd like to help. We'll confirm dates as soon as we can.

Finally, we did some radio interviews with founder of Abel & Cole, Keith Abel, the other day, and he was, as you'd expect, a really nice guy. Although our joint ambition is 650 bikes, I’m hoping we may well get over 1,000, which is two containers full!

You'll soon be able to see some great photos of the The Wheelie Big Bike Drop as photographer, Richard Burton, will be in Wimbledon on the 25th September and will then follow the shipment to Ghana, to get some much needed photos and feedback on the great uses people put the bikes to.

Thank you!
