There are various gender barriers to women cycling in some parts of Africa, such as bikes supposedly making women infertile, or enabling them to have affairs in another village. There is lots of research on this area, however, the short version is that:

• As family income increases, the 'problem' disappears
• Women learning together helps
• Women mechanics make great role models!
