BEN Namibia have a major focus on providing bikes to AIDS/HIV outreach workers. They have established several outreach Bicycle Empowerment Centre projects (BEC) utilising used shipping containers shipped full of bikes that have been delivered to outlying areas. The containers give the projects dry and secure storage and workshop space. BEN was set up by Michael Linke, who used to ride pedicabs in London. The project was inspired by the very successful Bicycle Empowerment Network in S. Africa.
BEN was set up by Michael Linke, about whom Merlin, Re~Cycle's founder says:
I vouch for Michael being a capable and committed man. He volunteered with Re~Cycle for a while, living in London, doing the London rickshaw thing!
He even helped me paint my house, top guy :)
His plan was to set up a Re~Cycle in Berlin, which evolved into him moving to Namibia and running that end of things.
