TANZANIA
UWABA is a community bicycle project based in Dar es Salaam, which promotes cycling as a healthy, green and cheap form of transport.
Re~Cycle sent its first shipment of bicycles, dispatched in a 20' container, on 6 January 2011.
The container was also purchased, to stay in Dar es Salaam and be converted to a bicycle workshop.
Matt (our mechanic) has visited and trained 13 local people as mechanics, to ensure a long life for the bikes.
The purpose is to set up a workshop and tools, provide good quality bikes, train mechanics to ensure a long life for the bikes.
The benefits are to save money on public transport, provide access to work and education.
You can see some photos of training here.
